Week of November 16th

 Sweater Weather is here!

I hope you are enjoying these chilly but beautiful days.  The cool weather has got me layering up and sipping warm drinks.  The teapot is going constantly, it seems.  There is nothing quite as comforting as a cup of tea.  I hope you are finding ways of keeping warm and enjoying the change in temperature.

While the temperatures are cooling down, we are heating things up in ELA.  We have started the new quarter strong with most students demonstrating mastery of reading response.  The scholars are doing a great job of citing the text to support their opinions and ideas about their reading.  In addition, we have been analyzing figurative language and comparing characters.  Both grades are getting close to wrapping up their novels.  I will be in school this week to gather the next set of reading materials and will email you with times that you can pick up materials.  Thank you for supporting your student in all of their learning endeavors.

5th Grade

The fifth graders are looking closely at the values that guide characters and their decisions.  They are learning how to compare/contrast ideas in the text as well.  This week we will learn about mood and how the author uses word choice, imagery, and settings to establish the mood of an event.  See below for details about class discussions and assignments.

6th Grade

As we are coming to the end of Bud, Not Buddy, the main character, Bud, has changed or transformed from the beginning of the text.  We are looking closely at the new relationships and experiences that Bud is having in these last few chapters.  The students will create some free verse poetry this week using elements of the text that have sparked a change in Bud.  Scholars will also have an active listening activity involving jazz this week.  For more details on this week's discussions and assignments, see below.
